Year 7 pupils in Childcare's very own "Dragons' Den"

Childcare's Tracey Jordan and Mary Walsh-Pammen, a teacher at Shenfield High School, have recently been busy working on a new initiative to help raise money for Childcare.

Mary, pictured in the group picture (right), is responsible for building business links between the school and the local community and charities.

"The £10 Challenge" — a "Dragons' Den" style initiative — was realised with the help of 29 budding year 7 pupils from the school (see right).

10 teams of year 7 children were given £10 by Childcare to use to invest in a project to raise more money (for charity) and build on their business skills at the same time.

All 10 teams had to present their ideas to the Dragons' Den panel (Mary and Tracey & Stuart McNabb from Childcare) who decided if the idea was worth proceeding with.

Once they were given their £10's they had 2 weeks to make money from the initial investment.

The ideas were really varied and included "guess the sweets in the jar", cake and biscuit making and re-investing money from cakes sold to make more cakes, a basketball competition, a football skills competition, a cinema show at lunchtime and many more.

This project raised a fantastic amount of £689 (£589 after taking out the initial investment of £100) - a great result!

"I felt that it was great to combine fundraising with business enterprise as so much is achieved in the end for both the school, the children and the charity," said Tracey.

Childcare will be offering the opportunity to participate in this scheme to other secondary schools in Essex over the coming year.
