July 2009
Childcare – Brentwood Catholic Children’s Society celebrated 25 years of caring for children and families in the Diocese at an Anniversary Mass held on Saturday, 13th June 2009 at the Cathedral Church of St. Mary and St. Helen, Brentwood.
We were honoured to have Bishop Thomas McMahon, President of the Society presiding over the Mass which was attended by the Mayor of Brentwood and other local dignitaries, past and present Trustees, Directors and staff, together with many loyal friends of the Society. Children and staff from Our Lady of Ransom Primary School, Rayleigh choir and New Hall School, Chelmsford choir led the singing and several other children contributed to this special occasion.

Mgr. John Armitage. Founder of the Society, gave an inspiring speech on the difficulties faced by the Catholic Children’s Societies and how the problems faced by children and families today are as complex as they were 25 years ago, enforcing the need for a service like Childcare. After a truly joyful service, where the singing almost took the roof off the Cathedral, there was presentation to Bishop Thomas and Mgr. John each of a glass plaque in recognition of their vision, development and ongoing support of the Society.

A small reception followed in the Parish Hall next door with light refreshments and plenty of delicious cakes. Here two young harpists from New Hall School played beautifully, despite the throng and activity around them. The Society would like to extend a special note of thanks to all those who helped to make this special day such a tremendous success.
